Fake Water Drops
I think I have perfected my formula for fake water drops. It is possible there are better ways, but this gave me good results so I thought I would share.
First, you will need some gloss varnish. I got this stuff. Varnish is a bit hydrophobic, which helps get you bigger drops.
Then you need a spray bottle, Karo syrup, and water.
First, lightly coat your object with the varnish. Let dry for about 30-60 minutes.
Mix your Karo syrup and water, 1 to 1. Put it in the spray bottle.
When you spray, twist the knob to get a less misty, more straight on squirt. This will give you the bigger drops. Then if you want to add in some little drops too, turn it to the mist setting. I found a combo looks pretty neat.
Let this sit for a while and the drops will freeze in place, allowing you plenty of time to photograph them and keep them from running all over.
One mistake I think I made was letting the drops sit overnight. I think some of them started to… wrinkle. I probably just should have waited an hour or so.
